Packaging Corp. of America Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2016 Results
(USA, Jan. 31, 2017) Packaging Corporation of America (PKG) today reported fourth quarter 2016 net income of $111 million, or $1.17 per share and $1.23 per share excluding special items. Fourth quarter net sales were $1.5 billion in 2016 and $1.4 billion in 2015. Full year 2016 earnings were $450 million, or $4.75 per share and $4.88 per share excluding special items. Full year 2016 net sales were $5.78 billion compared to 2015 net sales of $5.74 billion.

Hamburger Containerboard invests EUR 20 million in Gelsenkirchen mill
(Germany, Jan. 30, 2017) Hamburger Containerboard said it has completed an EUR 20 million paper machine upgrade project at its mill in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, and that PM 1 has been successfully restarted following three weeks of downtime.
The project included increasing the machine’s production width to 5 meters, along with upgrades to the film press and drying section. In addition, a new pope reeler to accommodate wider diameters and an upgraded soft-nip calender were installed.

Mondi to invest EUR 470 million in modernisation and expansion of its Steti mill
(Johannesburg, South Africa, Jan. 30, 2017) Mondi announced that it will invest EUR 470 million in the modernisation and expansion of the Steti mill in the Czech Republic, subject to obtaining approval for various tax incentives and necessary permitting. The project consists of the installation of a new recovery boiler, the rebuild of the fibre lines, the debottlenecking of the paper machines and an investment in a new 90,000 tonnes per annum machine glazed kraft paper machine.

Domtar to invest $25 million in upgrade projects at paper facilities in Pennsylvania
(USA, Jan. 30, 2017) Domtar Corp. will spend about $25 million to convert boilers to natural gas from coal and modernize equipment at two paper plants in Pennsylvania, according to a news report from the Charlotte Business Journal.
The work will allow the company to retain about 430 jobs in the Johnsonburg paper plant and another nearby paper-converting facility.

Romcarton Bucharest to launch new corrugated cardboard plan
(Bucharest, Romania, Jan. 27, 2017) Romanian corrugated cardboard maker Romcarton Bucharest has unveiled plans to open a new production facility in Popeşti-Leordeni, in the country’s southern part.
To carry out the investment, Romcarton Bucharest has obtained a bank loan of €29.6 million, of which some €27.5 million will be used to construct the facility, and the remaining €2.1 million will be used to purchase new machinery and related equipment.

Two new Toscotec’s tissue machines delivered to Vinda Paper; will bring a further increase of 60,000 tons/year
(Italy / China, Jan. 24, 2017) In December 2016, the Italian supplier Toscotec S.p.A. has delivered two tissue machines, TM 3 and 4, to Vinda Paper (Zhejiang) to be installed at its Longyou mill.

Valmet to supply three board machine rebuilds in North America
(Helsinki, Finland, Jan. 23, 2017) Valmet will supply three board machine rebuilds in North America. The customers remain confidential. The goals of the rebuilds are e.g. to increase production and the use of recycled and non-bleached fibers. The start-ups of the rebuilt board machines are scheduled for 2017 and 2018.

Stora Enso reconsiders plans to build a chemical pulp mill in Beihai, China
(Helsinki, Finland, Jan. 19, 2017) Stora Enso has initiated a process with the Government of Guangxi with the target to remove the authorisation for the hardwood chemical pulp mill from its investment permit.
Stora Enso has previously announced that it considers building a chemical pulp mill at its Beihai Mill site, once the consumer board machine is up and running. The final decision is still subject to the decision of Stora Enso's Board of Directors.

(Washington DC, USA, Jan. 19, 2017) The American Forest & Paper Association released its December 2016 U.S. Boxboard Report. Total boxboard production increased 0.8 percent when compared to December 2015, but decreased 0.3 percent from last month.
Unbleached Kraft Boxboard production decreased over the same month as last year and decreased compared to last month.
