Resolute Announces Indefinite Idling of Thorold Newsprint Mill
(Thorold, ON., Canada, March 10, 2017) Resolute Forest Products today announced the indefinite idling of its paper mill located in Thorold, Ontario. The facility, which employed over 100 workers, has an annual production capacity of approximately 197,000 metric tons of newsprint on one machine using 100 percent recycled furnish.

Eldorado postpones start-up of Três Lagoas BEK pulp line to 2020
(Gernsbach, Germany, March 03, 2017) Eldorado Brasil has revised the start-up date of the planned BEK pulp line at the Três Lagoas mill. The 2.5 million tpy line is supposed to start operating in 2020.

Valmet to supply two containerboard machines for Nine Dragons; will produce testliner and fluting
(Helsinki, March 08, 2017) Valmet will supply two containerboard production lines and related automation systems for Nine Dragons Industries Co., Ltd. in China. The new production lines (PM 39 in Quanzhou and PM 40 in Chongqing) are planned to produce high-quality testliner and fluting grades out of 100 percent recycled raw materials. (Canada, March 03, 2017) Sunscreen’s UV-blocking power could get a major boost from the addition of an all-natural waste product from the pulp and paper industry.
Chemical engineer Shiping Zhu and colleagues have found that lignin – a material found in the support tissues of vascular plants – can help sunscreen prevent ultraviolet rays from damaging the skin.

New use for paper industry’s sludge and fly ash; can replace up to 50% of oil-based polypropylene
(Helsinki, Finland, March 08, 2017) VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland examined, as part of the EU’s Reffibre project, whether new industrial applications could be developed for various types of sludge and fly ash generated by the paper and board industry.
