Resolute to Idle Coated Paper Machine at Catawba; will remove about 193,000 metric tons per year of coated paper capacity
(Canada, June 8, 2017) Resolute Forest Products on June 1 announced that it will idle a paper machine, PM 2, at its Catawba pulp and paper mill in South Carolina on June 30.
About 180 employees will be affected by the decision.
Resolute has experienced lower demand for all kinds of lightweight, coated paper products, including magazines, catalogs and flyer inserts, according to spokeswoman Debbie Johnston.

In a press release, SCA said, “The closure of the Flagstaff tissue production plant is part of SCA’s Tissue Roadmap and is aligned with the company’s strategy to optimize the geographic production footprint to drive cost and capital efficiency and further increase value creation in the Professional Hygiene business area.”

Brazilian pulp and paper exports increase, French pulp production rises
(Greenwich (CT), USA, June 8, 2017) While Brazilian domestic pulp consumption fell in March 2017, pulp exports surged almost 10 percent. Meanwhile, French pulp production output climbed 3 percent for the month, according to CW Research’s Paper and Pulp Country Market Data coverage available on IPPWeek.com.

ANDRITZ successfully starts up second tissue machine with steel Yankee for Hebei Yihoucheng, China
(Graz, June 9, 2017) International technology Group ANDRITZ has successfully completed start-up of the second tissue machine supplied to Hebei Yihoucheng, China.
The PrimeLineCOMPACT tissue machine has a design speed of 1,650 m/min and a width of 2.85 m. The Yankee, manufactured entirely of steel, has a diameter of 3.65 m. It is the “twin” of its predecessor, the TM1, that was started-up successfully in 2014.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö to Invest in Genuine Vegetable Parchment Products in France
(France, June 6, 2017) Ahlstrom-Munksjö announced that it will invest in new production capacity at its Saint Severin plant in France to meet the growing demand for Genuine Vegetable Parchment (GVP) products used mainly in baking and cooking papers as well as in other food packaging solutions.
The total investment is approximately EUR 6.7 million.

Paper Company SCA Invests €800 Million In Pulp Expansion Project
(Sweden, May 31, 2017) SCA, the Swedish paper-product company, has announced that its ongoing expansion project at the Östrand pulp mill will increase bleached kraft-pulp capacity from 430,000 to 900,000 tonnes per year.
SCA reports that the total investment amounts to approximately SEK 7.8 billion (€800 million), SEK 3.1 billion (€317 million) of which was invested by the end of the first quarter of 2017.

Total U.S. Printing-Writing Paper Shipments Decreased 7% in April
(Washington DC, USA, May 25, 2017) The American Forest & Paper Association has released its April 2017 Printing-Writing Paper Report. According to the report released on May 24, 2017, total printing-writing paper shipments decreased 7% in April compared to April 2016. All four printing-writing grades posted year-over-year shipment declines in April, though the decline for coated free sheet was less than one-half of one percent.
