Nippon Paper takes to torrefaction to produces biomass fuel
(Tokyo, Japan, August 18, 2016) Torrefied pellets will be used in Nippon Paper’s Kushiro coal-fired power plant. This is roasting wood in a similar manner to coffee beans.
Through this process, called torrefaction, the Japanese paper company produces biomass fuel. This fuel can then be mixed with coal and burned in coal-fired power plants. The portion of electricity generated from biomass is eligible to be sold through feed-in tariff systems, under which renewable energy is purchased at a fixed price.
The company has repeatedly tested the fuel by burning it in its own power generation facilities. Now that it has honed its methods, it plans to launch fuel production in Thailand next April. It will consider starting sales to outside customers next year as well.
